Taste the Cake!

Larry, one of the Christian guys I’m building into, was sitting with a guy called Steve*. I was watching the conversation from behind and noticed they were going through the Knowing God Personally booklet. (a simple gospel outline) They’d be going through it for 10/15 minutes when Larry called me over. Steve had a question, ‘What do you mean when you say you believe in Jesus?’ I explained it was about trusting that the death and resurrection of Jesus provided the payment for our sins enabling us to come to God.

I then asked him a series of questions. I asked whether he believed he was a sinner. He said yes. I asked whether he believed Jesus existed. He said yes. I asked whether he believed Jesus died on the cross. He said yes. I asked whether he believed Jesus was resurrected. He said yes.

He was hovering at the line as to whether to accept this for himself and he wasn’t 100% convinced, but he said there was no other way.

I told a story of a cake. You can look at a cake on the table and observe how good it looks. You can see other people eat the cake and observe them enjoying it. But, you’re never going to enjoy the taste of the cake until you take a bite. It’s the same way with following Jesus, you can observe from a distance and watch other people following Jesus, but you need to accept Him to enjoy Him.

I asked, ‘Are you ready?’ He said OK.

After brief instruction about how to pray we prayed together. I said a line, and he copied me. He said sorry for his sins, asked Jesus into his life, and committed to following Him.

Larry is meeting Steve again today to start some basic follow up and hopefully over time Steve will become established in the faith.
